Man dies after driving into lake

A man driving an SUV into Lake Miltmore was pronounced dead and another person rescued after four Lake County sheriff’s deputies jumped into the water to pull the people from the SUV, authorities said.

A passenger got out but told responding officers that a driver was still in the upside-down car, which went through a T intersection at Engle and Nathan Hill drives and into the lake about 2 a.m.

The SUV was traveling eastbound Engle Drive and crossed over Nathan Hale Drive before driving approximately 200 feet through a yard, struck a boat lift, and came to rest upside down approximately 50 Feet into Lake Miltmore, officials said.

After deputies learned the driver was trapped inside the vehicle, four Lake County sheriff’s deputies entered the water in an attempt to rescue the driver, officials said. During the rescue attempt the Lake Villa dive team arrived and eventually removed the driver from the vehicle.

The driver and passenger were transported to Condell Hospital where the driver was pronounced dead.

"The front-seat passenger was already out upon our arrival but he was indicating that there was another occupant in the vehicle, the driver, so that’s why my deputies went in the water – in an effort to make a rescue to get him out,” said Lieutenant Jeff Burke, of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The four deputies were treated on the scene.
